A team of scientists and drilling engineers performed the Antarctic equivalent of pulling a rabbit out of the hat deep under the ice sheet. They reentered a 3,405-meter-deep borehole and collected ice along a parallel vertical path. It is the first time anyone has recovered a replicate ice core in this manner.
