Scientists aboard a Swedish icebreaker are on a two-month expedition to study a large swath of the sea ice system in the Southern Ocean. The U.S. and Swedish researchers will work on problems that range from sea ice thickness to the gases released to the atmosphere by microbial organisms living in and around the ice pack.
