Most of the big science at the South Pole Station goes on year-round. But other research takes advantage of the darkness of the winter sky and the proximity of the geomagnetic pole. It’s up to the South Pole research associates to brave some of the world’s coldest temperatures to ensure the instruments work through the long winter night.
