Down the Hole

Ice cores from Antarctica, Greenland and elsewhere in the world serve as a way for scientists to travel back in time to understand past climate. But they only tell part of the story. Ryan Bay and his colleagues send an optical dust logger down the finished holes to peer farther into the ice sheet to glean more details.
