One era ended and another began on Jan. 12, 2008, when the American flag was lowered from its place on top of the iconic South Pole dome and then raised over the new multi-million-dollar elevated station. A delegation of federal officials from the United States joined station personnel in dedicating the new Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.
